100,000 fine residents call Salt Lake City home, with more than 2 million more people rounding out its greater metropolitan area. Founded in 1847 by Mormon pioneers, whose prophet was none other than Brigham Young, the city is still best known for being the headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS).

Salt Lake City has long been a source of religious contention. With a largely Mormon population, among whose principals advocated polygamy, Salt Lake found itself in a battle with the US federal government. Refusing to follow then President James Buchanan?s ?request? to cease all plural marriages, (by this time) Governor Brigham Young?s rebellion resulted in what was known as the Utah War. Lasting 20 years and seeing numerous area leaders jailed for their beliefs, in 1890, the LDS officially declared the end of polygamy. Six years later Utah became a state and Salt Lake City its capital.
