Are you interested in joining the legal profession without actually becoming an attorney yourself? Consider a career as a paralegal. In many areas, paralegals perform several of the same tasks as a lawyer. He or she may draft documents, perform legal research, interview clients or witnesses, investigate, and organize files. Paralegal schools in New York offer quickly-completed certificate programs as well as associate’s degrees. Coursework includes legal terminology and procedure, civil process, legal ethics, writing and research, and an introduction to the U.S. court system. Certification as a paralegal is voluntary and is handled by several independent organizations, including NALA.
