The essentials of the criminal justice system, in addition to criminal justice skills, are covered in this program. Foundation in criminal law, legal procedures, criminal evidence and criminology is offered by the program. Law enforcement, the courts and corrections, are included in the areas of study. Also included is a foundation on the risks and damages associated with digital fraud and cyber crimes, including Internet crime, cyber stalking, electronic crime and identity theft. The program emphasizes many aspects of cyber security such as the methodologies of inspection, protection, detection, reaction and response.

The topics that are covered include: formal specification and verification of security properties, operating system security, trust management, security auditing and intrusion detection, security policy, safeguards and countermeasures, risk mitigation, covert channels and identification and authentication. This course of study also includes courses in intrusion detection in network security, firewalls, virtual private networks (VPNs), virtual local area networks (VLANs), backup and disaster recovery techniques, smart card security, and estimation and management of risks associated with security. The upper-level classes focus on a wide range of specialties in the criminal justice system including criminalistics, victimology and forensics investigations.

This curriculum offers a balanced blend of theory and application employed in the field by integrating interpersonal skills along with administrative subject matter. You will learn about the criminal justice process and learn to improve your interpersonal communication skills. Interdisciplinary study of the mechanisms of social control, criminology and criminal justice in American society is offered by the program. The curriculum includes training in the latest technology, criminal law and procedures, communication and cyber crime issues. The program aims to help graduates develop and enhance those skills in human relations that are necessary to be successful in the industry, as well as acquire an understanding of the causes of and prevention of crime.

Career Opportunities

This program will prepare graduates to pursue positions in the criminal justice arena, including cyber security and similar fields, law enforcement*, corrections, private investigation, and security. Successful graduates will have the valuable skills and knowledge essential to being able to recognize, resist and recover from attacks on networked systems and to pursue entry-level positions involving criminal justice, such as local, state and federal law enforcement jobs.

The program also provides the academic preparation to help graduates go after a broad spectrum of criminal justice and cyber security related careers in the private sector. These involve workplace security and private investigations, cyber crimes, and computer system risks and threats over multiple systems of Internet and intranet systems.
