Goodwin College is an innovative culturally diverse community that:
- Has the mission and commitment to successfully become an integral part an ever-changing future
- Possesses the entrepreneurial spirit to refocus itself to meet the challenges this poses
- Celebrates a need based sensitive academic atmosphere where students from diverse backgrounds are empowered to thrive in tomorrow\'s world.
Our main, and first-line, defense against intentional attacks on our communities are our law enforcement officers and criminal justice system. "Old-fashioned" reactive policing methods are incapable of addressing the high-tech terrorist threats in today\'s world. In order to detect and prevent these modern threats, officers must be trained to conduct proactive patrols and investigations. Goodwin College developed the Homeland Security Program, specifically the Criminal Justice Option for modern police officers to be better trained and educated with a vast array of subject matter far beyond what they are able to learn in the academy.
In response, Goodwin College has developed the Homeland Security Program and specifically the Criminal Justice Option. Deeper understanding of the terrorist threat and the basics of emergency response to natural and man-made disasters and critical thinking skills that will be beneficial to the students as they enter a criminal justice career or seek advancement in agencies where they are employed, is what the program intents to develop, challenge and exposed the students. Unlike a typical Criminal Justice curriculum, here students will be taught the basics of homeland security together with specialized job related courses. We believe a background in these and contemporary policing subjects will make students more well-rounded, more valuable, and more capable of addressing threats in today\'s society. Once the students have completed the program, they should be able to embark on an entry-level position or possibly an advancement in the Criminal Justice profession.
On September 11, 2001, everything changed. Suddenly colleges found a need to provide classes for a career in a new field called "homeland security". The safety and security of our nations was entrusted to agencies such as law enforcement, fire departments, and government criminal justice agencies.
Currently, homeland security combines the services of a number of fields, each of which has some relevance when it comes to the threat of terrorism. Bear in mind there are also the day-to-day duties of tackling other disasters, such as floods, hurricanes, tornadoes etc. All these demand hard work, specialized knowledge, and well-developed skills for assuring the protection of people of all nations.
The Associate in Homeland Security program gives students an education in a variety of areas such as emergency planning and security, fire service, corrections, emergency management/first responders, private and personal security, computer security, and cybercrime investigation and prevention. This program will prepare you for entry-level positions in fire services, government law enforcement agencies, diplomatic security, and customs and border protection.
