The Legal and Criminal Justice programs provide a great stepping stone for those candidates who would like to join the legal or paralegal professions, law enforcement, corrections, and other areas of our indigenous criminal justice system that continuously increase. The programs offer courses on the standards and principles of the legal field, application of procedural law, factual investigation, and legal writing and research.

Criminal Justice Diploma

The diploma program in Criminal Justice prepares graduates for job opportunities in law enforcement, corrections, or investigations through legal, technical, and business coursework.

This diploma can be used by the students who have a degree or experience in different fields, to develop skills that will help them in successful career change. The career opportunities that Criminal justice offers are criminal investigator, correction officer, custom agent, legal assistant and administrator. You can begin your career in Criminal Justice as a criminal investigator, corrections officer, customs agent, legal assistant, or working for the courts.

This course of study is made up of forty eight credit hours of coursework.

Coursework includes:

• Practical guidelines for law enforcement officers, including the legal aspects of daily duties and the rights of defendants.
• Areas of law such as criminal law, which includes any act or omission violating public law that forbids or commands it; business law with an overview of contracts, corporations, agencies, partnerships, and bailments; and family law with a focus on divorce, custody, alimony, child support, adoption and juvenile law.
• Learning professional techniques for legal research and writing such as organizing a plan for research, using primary and secondary sources, and creating a system to research legal issues.

Criminal Justice: Associate of Applied Business

Graduating students will be prepared for jobs in corrections, investigation, juvenile law, and security through the associate's degree program in Criminal Justice. You will have a strong foundation in the human service fields when you earn a Criminal Justice degree.

A Criminal Justice associate degree can be the start of a career in the field or the first step on the path to a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice. As a Criminal Justice professional, you might work in criminal investigations, corrections, customs, the courts, or even in a law office. Federal, state and local government agencies; security companies; private investigation services; businesses and retail stores; law firms; and in private probation may employ graduates.

This program is completed after earning 96 credit hours.

Courses include:

• The relationships and functions of police agencies, defense and prosecution, judges and juries, and correctional institutional personnel.
• Practical guidelines for law enforcement officers in relation to the legal aspects of their general duties along with the rights of defendants.
• Criminal law pertains to any act or omission in violation of a public law; family law includes divorce, custody, alimony, child support, adoption, and juvenile law; property law includes estates, licensing, marital and concurrent interests, and landlord/tenant relationships.

Certificate

The certificate program in Criminal Justice prepares students for admission to law enforcement academies or employment in corrections or investigations through legal, technical and business coursework.

When you earn a certificate, you may be taking the perfect first step toward a career in Criminal Justice. A certificate is a valuable educational asset and may be used as a building block toward a Criminal Justice degree, or it may be used by students who have degrees and/or experience in unrelated fields who desire to make a successful career change. A selection of professions available in criminal justice include: criminal investigator, corrections officer, customs agent, legal assistant, and court administrator.

Students complete this program after 48 credit hours.

Courses include:

• Law enforcement officer guidelines, including the legal aspects of daily duties and the rights of defendants.
• Legal and trial procedures, including criminal law encompassing violations and omissions of public laws; business law introducing contracts and applications of legal principles as they relate to business entities; and family law including divorce/custody issues and juvenile law.
• Develop the skills you require for legal research and writing. Topics contain constituting a research plan, the use of major and minor sources, and framing an organized process of analyzing legal issues.

Bachelor of Science

Students will be prepared for an entry-level job in corrections, court systems, or other criminal justice systems through the Criminal Justice bachelor's degree program. In today's environment it is essential to have the knowledge base to deal with a changing economy and society, therefore, a combination of education and technical skills are vital to success.

Criminal investigator, corrections officer, legal assistant, customs agent, and court administrator are included in the careers in Criminal Justice. Graduates can move onto work at federal, state, and local government offices; security businesses; private investigation companies; businesses and retail shops; law firms; and in private probation. Employers constantly search for Criminal Justice graduates with abilities including strong oral and written communication skills, quantitative skills, individual and teamwork abilities, and ethics and moral values.

This program offers students courses on:

• The facets of the criminal justice system, classification systems, and modern criminal justice trends. As a student, you will learn about classifications systems, terminology, and trends in criminal justice today.
• Initial crime scene searches to follow-up investigations and eventual case presentations are the fundamentals of criminal investigations. Tools employed, development of skills, and utilization of techniques by the modern criminal investigators to identify perpetrators and reconstruct criminal activities will also be included.
• Current issues in criminal justice. You will be introduced to methods and philosophies that will soon rule the criminal justice branch as well as their effects ethically, legally, socially, and politically.
