Corrections Officer Career Outlook

Do you want to work in the field of corrections?  If you do there is definitely a demand for you within the correctional system.  While it is unfortunate that the percentage of people that are getting incarcerated continues to increase it does create a demand for quality corrections officers.  There are several areas that corrections officers can work in.  This creates a lot of opportunity to give people interested in this field a chance to be an active part of it.  The three main areas of corrections are juvenile, federal, and state.  Each one has opportunities and unique qualities.

Juvenile corrections

The juvenile correction system is one of the more overwhelmed and overworked systems that are a part of corrections.  There is a trend of young people committing crimes and getting involved in the wrong choices that has lead to an increase in population for juvenile corrections facilities.  The kids in these systems need a good corrections officer to help them learn respect, self respect, and how to make better choices.  Corrections officers have a valuable opportunity to set an example for these kids and help them turn life around so they can be productive adults that are good role models and contributors to society.  Juvenile correction facilities need to have exceptional corrections officers to help with their day to day operations.  Correction officers need to have a firm hand but understand human nature and how to reach out to kids.

Federal and state corrections

The federal corrections system and state corrections system are always in need of qualified people to help manage inmates and keep order.  Officers are always on duty and they have many important duties to tend to on a daily basis.  They are responsible for room searches, head counts (which make sure that everybody is present and accounted for), keeping order, making sure inmates are being productive with their time, and attending to emergencies.  The role of the corrections officer is to ensure that inmates are safe and that they are not causing unsafe conditions as well.  Many corrections officers are in charge of heading up programs to help improve an inmate’s quality of life when they are incarcerated and if they are eligible for reentry into society.  These programs include GED classes for those who do not have a high school diploma, arts and crafts, sports, exercise, and certification programs for work that they are eligible for upon release.

Outlook and eligibility

Most prisons and jail systems do require some continuing education or criminal justice training to be qualified to be a corrections officer.  The corrections officer career outlook is very good though and good people will always be in demand.  A qualified corrections officer can make the difference between successful rehabilitation or reentry into society and a repeat offender.

If you have been considering entering the field of corrections there is opportunity for you to receive a position and advance within the system.  People who have gotten into trouble and are paying their debt to society through incarceration need to have people around them who will take an active role in helping them work through their situation and prepare for a successful rehabilitation.  If you believe that you could be the person to do that for inmates and juveniles make sure that you check out more information on what it takes to become a corrections officer.  You could make a decision that gives you a rewarding career and the ability to really make a difference in the lives of people who have made wrong choices.
